At CMM we believe that children thrive in learning environments where they can learn at their own pace and in their own way. We also believe in the valuable role of play in making learning fun and accessible. These beliefs will continue to guide CMM's efforts as we move forward with plans for the Museum.

The delight of parents, teachers, and community leaders continues to grow as the Village of Port Jefferson will soon be home to a brand new museum. The Children's Maritime Museum at Port Jefferson (CMM) will serve visitors by providing interactive exhibits and programs that stimulate curiosity and motivate learning. Once opened, CMM will be the only museum in mid-Suffolk County offering programs specifically designed for young children. The Museum will have a unique and important role; it will:

  • Provide learning opportunities about the Long Island Sound ecosystem as well as maritime history and scientific concepts.
  • Welcome children of all backgrounds and abilities to learn with and from each other.
  • Offer a safe educational environment where children are encouraged to direct their own learning and to discover their interests.
  • Present problems, materials and text tailored to the user’s developmental and experiential levels.
  • Collaborate with caregivers and teachers as we share our hands-on and inter-generational approach to learning.

CMM opened in the summer of 2007 in the skipjack room in the Port Jefferson Village Center. Summer Fun programs were held for children of all ages as well as family weekend programs. The events in the skipjack room will continue in the winter with drop-in programs for all ages.
